Weight Training for Women
Here are is a quick list of reasons why weight training for women is a good idea:
1.) Post-menopausal women are no longer able to lay down more bone due to the absence of estrogen. Therefore, it is crucial that they build as much bone as possible earlier in life. Wolfe's Law tells us that bone will be built if the direction and magnitude of loading are adequate. Meaning that weight training exercise that load the spine build bone. So it is important to incorporate free weight exercises such as squat, shoulder presses, and lunges to help optimize bone growth. Additionally, research has shown that women who weight training post-menopause hold on to bone while women who do not continue to lose bone rapidly
2.) Muscle is very metabolically active. This means as you build muscle you will begin to increase your metabolism, making it easier to burn fat and lose weight.
3.) Increased strength means your everyday activities will be much easier. Everything from shoveling snow, carrying groceries to carrying laundry will require far less effort.
4.) Weight training is a great way to increase strength in ligaments and joints helping to prevent wear and tear as you go through life.
5.) Improved self-confidence
